Bougainvillea

Location: Plant in full sun. In the hottest inland area_plant in very bright, filtered light.

These plants need protection from frost. Where frost is expected, vines should be given a protected (from winds and cold), warm wall to grow on or against_or the warmest spot in the garden.

If vines make it through the first winter (in cold/frost areas) they will be big enough to handle any winter damage and recover.

Planting:

Although the best selection of Bougainvilleas is during the warmer months, planting in early spring (after all danger of frost) will give the vines the longest possible growing time before the next cold/frost season.

Bougainvillea roots are highly sensitive to disturbance. Don't let this discourage you from growing these vines in your garden though_just take care when you are planting. (see diagram below)

The fragile rootball of a bougainvillea must be handled with care or the plant may die. When planting, follow these steps:

  • Slip a heavy-duty
  • rubber band around
  • plastic pot or tie
  • with twine. Using
  • a utility knife, cut
  • bottom from pot.

  •
    Fertilizing:

Feed your Bougainvillea twice a year, once in spring and again in the summer. Use a balanced food such as 10-10-5, 10,10,10, or 14-14-14.

    Watering:

Water once a week (deeply, slowly) while plants are young and growing fast, then ease off temporarily in midsummer to promote better flowering.

    Pruning:

Prune heavily in the spring (March) to promote new growth. Espaliered plants or those grown against a wall need to have long stems cut back lightly throughout the growing season to promote more flowering wood.

Slitopposite sides of pot, leaving rubber band or twine intact. Supporting bottom with one hand, set pot in hole so surrounding soil is level with surface of rootball.

Place pot in hole in ground. Refill hole with mulch or compost-amended soil, then slip pot out of the ground. Water throughly; if soil settles below rootball, add extra fill.
