Calla Lilly
|
These fragrant bulbs are natives of the Transvaal in South Africa. This area
changes from being wet and swampy in one season to being as dry as the steppes in another.
The Calla Lily is a plant that is accustomed to having unlimited water during
its growing period while the tuber almost completely dries out during the dry season.
Soil should be loose, but nourishing. Bear in mind that this is a swamp plant
that needs to be well fed during its entire growth period. Wait until March or April
before starting the plant. If weather conditions allow, it will bloom from June to August.
Once the flower and leaves have withered, dig or take up the tuber for its
dormant period before it starts its whole cycle again in the spring. Store the tubers in
loose peat at about 42½ - 46½ F.
