How to Grow Sweet Peas from Seed

Customers often admire the Sweet Peas we grow along some of our fences beginning in late summer. By the time they are in full bloom, it's too late to start your own. It is possible to grow your own Sweet Peas if you start now and follow these three steps:

1. Buy your seeds. The first important step is to choose the right type of sweet peas. The key phrase to look for on seed packets is "early flowering." These varieties bloom during short, cool winter days.

2. Sweet peas perform best in cool, moist, rich soil, and they need a trellis or something similar to climb on. Prepare soil by making a 6" wide trench 12 - 18" deep just at the base of a trellis. Mix one part Roger's Planting Mix with two parts of the removed soil and backfill, adding Roger's Soil Activator as directed on the label.

3. Soak seeds in water indoors for 24 hours, then sow in moist soil 1 to 2 inches deep. Press soil firmly over seeds, then water. Keep soil cool with a thick layer of mulch, sprinkled daily (mulch should stay moist), but deep water your sweet peas 3 times a week until they sprout. Protect from birds with netting or a wire screen, and bait for snails and slugs.
