TILLANDSIAS

RARE AND UNUSUAL PLANTS

Tillandsias are true air plants. Unlike most plants, they do not grow in soil, but gather nutrients and moisture through their leaves. Botanists call plants that grow this way Epiphytes. Tillandsias are a genus of the Bromeliad family of plants.

Tillandsias have exotic blooms. On many species the leaves will turn to bright colors during flowering, adding to their fascinating beauty. In a few amazing species, it lasts up to a year or more.

After flowering, tillandsias reproduce by developing offsets called pups. Usually a parent plant has several pups but occasionally it can have a dozen or more.

Tillandsias are exceptionally hardy plants. Most will grow in temperatures ranging from freezing to over one hundred degrees. They will grow in filtered sun or artificial light. They should be sprayed with water twice weekly _ more if kept in a dry area.
