Layered Bulb Garden
Step One:
Using a 16" terra cotta bulb pot, place 2 or 3 tiny pieces of broken crockery over drain hole. Add 4" of
Roger's Potting Soil for the first level of bulbs. Sprinkle 2 tbsp. of
Bulb Booster bulb food on top of each layer
before setting bulbs in place.
Step Two:
Place a maximum of 13 large bulbs (daffodils, *hyacinths and/or *tulips) "point up" on this first layer and
cover with 2" of Roger's Potting Soil to make the second layer. Sprinkle with
Bulb Booster.
Step Three:
Place up to 20 smaller bulbs (crocus, dwarf narcissus, muscari and/or scilla) "point up" on this second layer
and cover with 2" of Roger's Potting
Soil to make the third and final top layer.
Step Four:
Plant 1-2 color packs of pansies or violas (6-12 individual plants), being careful not to disturb any of your bulbs.
Then, water thoroughly using low pressure. Slowly apply water over and over until the soil is
thoroughly saturated.
Step Five:
Place pot in bright, filtered light with
1/2 sun and
1/2 shade until the first bulb foliage sprouts. Then, move pot
to where it receives either full sun or morning sun
and afternoon shade. Water thoroughly once a week, twice
if day temperatures are high or dry winds prevail, or plants appear to need more.
* Tulips and Hyacinths must be chilled for 8 weeks beginning early October.
After chilling, plant bulbs immediately. If
you plant to use Tulips or Hyacinths in your layered bulb garden, you must do all your planting
after 8 weeks of chilling.
