Allen W. Cunningham was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. From an early age, he showed an interest in art and handiwork. In grade school, a collection of Beatrix Potter books were frequently checked out and not only spurred his growing imagination, but became a lifelong inspiration. Later in his education, Allen graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a special certificate to teach art. After graduating from the university, Allen spent many years in Southern California. While there, his interest in collecting antique children's books, antique dolls, and antique toys culminated with his first artistic attempts. First, there were original watercolor illustrations of paper dolls, followed by the original attempts at art dolls much like those seen today. |
Allen works in paper-clay and his art dolls can range in size from six inches to twelve inches. Each doll is hand painted and clothing is made in a variety of fabrics, both new and antique. The dolls are often placed in vignettes that feature handmade or antique one-of-a-kind accessories. Allen W. Cunningham currently resides in Northeast Ohio. His work has been featured on television in HGTV's Carol Duvall Show and in a Smithsonian Institution commercial, in magazines, as licensed designs in Bethany Lowe's catalogues, and shows around the US. as licensed designs. |
