Caring for Your Fresh
Cut Christmas Tree

Caring for Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

Selecting and taking home a fresh-cut Christmas tree is one of the most exciting parts of the holiday season, but keeping your tree alive can be daunting! Thankfully, it’s not actually that hard to care for your tree when you buy it at Roger’s Gardens. We only source the finest, freshest trees, and we set you up with all the information you need to extend the life of your freshly-cut Christmas tree.

Finding Your Perfect Tree

We make it easy for you to find your perfect Christmas tree because we only sell the highest quality trees. Almost every tree on our lot is grown in Washington state at high elevations which makes for fuller, stronger trees than most, which are grown further south at low elevations. Many of our trees are transported down the hillside by helicopter, since trucks cannot access the elevations where most of our Roger’s Gardens trees are grown. The only trees we don’t source from Washington are the rare and absolutely stunning Silvertip Fir trees, grown at a 7,500 ft elevation near Mt. Shasta in Northern California. The trees are dormant when cut, meaning they can last much longer than other varieties.

Caring for Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

All of our trees come from small family owned businesses that use special methods to ensure the beauty and longevity of our fresh Christmas trees. Our trees are harvested about a week before arriving, rather than the standard 6-week delay from harvest to store, and are hand-selected for harvest rather than clear-cutting rows of trees. To test your Christmas tree for freshness, run your hands down the branches–if the needles and branches remain flexible, your tree is fresh. If the needles are brittle under your fingertips, you may want to look for another!

The fresh-cut varieties you’ll be able to shop at Roger’s Gardens are:

  • Silvertip Fir
  • Roger’s Blue Noble
  • Wild Noble Fir
  • Noble Fir
  • Nordmann Fir
  • Fraser Fir

Bringing Your Christmas Tree Home

After you’ve selected your perfect tree, it’s time to take it home or have it conveniently delivered! At Roger’s Gardens, we make it easy for you. We’ll make a fresh-cut on the base of your Christmas tree—essential for ensuring lasting freshness—before attaching your tree to our specialized mechanical shaker. We push a button and the tree shakes for 30 seconds, removing stray needles and ensuring the tree will arrive at your door as clean as possible.

Once your tree gets a fresh-cut and shake, it is netted and attached to either a plastic or rebar tree stand. Finally, your tree is placed in a large bag and tied at the top and bottom. When your tree arrives at your home and is stood up, all you have to do is untie the top of the bag, slide it down the tree, and tuck it under the tree skirt. At the end of the holiday season, you can slide the bag back up the tree and remove the tree while inside the bag from your house, preventing needles from falling on the floor.

Setting Up Your Tree for a
Successful Season

Another great way to help your Christmas tree last is to keep an eye on the temperature and humidity in your home and your tree away from heating vents. A tree’s sweet spot is 62-65 degrees Fahrenheit and 40% or higher humidity, so do your best to keep your thermostat low and pull out a humidifier if your space is dry. If you can, try to make sure your tree is in a relatively cool, dark space in your home to further keep your Christmas tree from drying out–once it’s all lit up with your gorgeous lights and ornaments, you’ll be happy it’s there, and your tree will be happier too!

Helping Your Fresh-Cut Tree Last

Cold water and use of the tree preservative “Keeps It Green” are the best ways to keep a fresh-cut Christmas tree alive longer. The moment you are home and your tree is up, make sure to fill the stand with plenty of fresh water. Check the water level daily and top it off whenever needed throughout the season to keep your Christmas tree fresh longer.

It only takes a few steps to care for your Christmas tree and to ensure it stays fresh and happy all season long. At Roger’s Gardens, we set you up for success by sourcing from small farmers and ensuring a clean, easy transition from our lot to your home. With a bit of care and lots of water, your specialty fresh-cut Christmas tree will stay as beautiful as the day you got it.
