While collecting and researching antique Halloween pieces, a door creaked open to reveal a haunting cast of characters who have led Scott Smith on an artistic journey for over twenty years. He does his best to put a personal spin on the classic themes of the past. His dedication to originality and details has earned him a loyal following for my curious and unexpected characters. |

New works start with a simple sketch. Ideas can come from old postcards, pumpkins growing on a vine, and even antique fabrics with interesting colors or textures. Sculpting is a favorite part of my process. Scott loves pushing the clay around until a character reveals itself. Then comes the tedious part of his process, mold making. Molds give him the opportunity to make multiples if he choose. Pieces are cast in composition or paper-mache and then painted with many washes of acrylic colors to create depth. Armatures are constructed of wood and wrapped in layers of cotton-batting to give the body its form. Being self-taught at sewing and pattern making, costuming often takes many hours. Different textiles are draped over the body until he finds the look that captures the personality of the character. |

Rucus Studio is located in the basement of his Michigan home. He’s fortunate to have a dedicated space for creating, painting, and sewing, as well as an unfinished area for making bigger messes with woodworking and mold making. |
